Dear Sir,

I wish to make reference to my son, Alfred Ward, who a little more than a year ago, after serving for 8 years in the Hong Kong Police Service, immediately went out to take up his duties there. Judging from his frequent letters, he was doing alright and liked the work fairly well. We have, however, just received the regretful news that he has been requested to send in his resignation to terminate his service in the force.

Seeing that he has only been in the Colony for a year and having to adapt to the climatic conditions of the Colony, he was unable to save money to enable him to pay his passage home, of course, to his disadvantage. The result is that a young man finds himself stranded in a foreign country, friendless and destitute.

He makes a pitiful appeal to us to try and send him the money to pay his passage home. Under our humble circumstances, this is impossible, as I have eight younger brothers and sisters all dependent on my meager wages.

The cause of my son's compulsory resignation follows. I went down on Garden Road and heard shots being fired; there were a group of brown sugar addicts who were compelled to fire on the police. Through this incident, which was called a "riot," two of those concerned were wounded. Although my son thought he had done the right thing, he was absolutely wronged by Brown & Stripes, the Chief of Police, and was reduced to the ranks. As a result, I had to hand in my resignation to leave the Police force.
